This is a picture based Back to School Spot the Difference activity! It's got 10 different spot the difference pictures and if you've got children who need some extra practice with visual discrimination, visual perception, or just tracking their eyes across a busy picture, this one's for you.
Here's how it works: there are 10 super detailed Back to School pictures, and each one comes in two sizes. You've got big 17x11 posters (they print across two pages, so you just laminate and tape them together — great for doing this as a whole group activity on an easel or wall!), and you've also got regular 8.5x11 pages if you want to use it at a table with a small group.
Then here's the main part — for each big picture, there are 4 smaller versions, and each one is missing an object from the original! Children have to study the big picture and figure out what's missing from each smaller one.
There's a lot going on in these pictures, so I also made task cards to help guide them. I took the objects that are actually missing and put them on cards, plus I threw in some decoy objects too (8 cards total per picture).
The way it works is the a child picks up a card, look at the object, and then at the larger reference picture to see where it is in that picture.
They then have to look at one of the 4 smaller boards and have to decide — is this actually missing from the picture, or is it hiding in there somewhere? It's a great way to build that sustained attention and visual scanning skill!

For an answer key so you don't have to work too hard trying to find the missing object there's a second set of task cards with a little green checkmark next to the ones that are actually missing, so you've got an easy answer key right there. You don't even need to print those ones out, just keep them handy for reference.
Everything is meant to be printed, laminated, and cut so it holds up and you can use it year after year. It's perfect for centers, morning work, OT sessions, small groups, or even whole group time with those big posters!
