Looking for a fun, hands-on way to teach number sense and early composing and decomposing skills this fall? These Making 5 Activities are perfect for preschool, pre-K, and kindergarten students learning to build and break apart the number 5 — all through an engaging back to school  theme!

What's Included?

School Supplies Collection Board Game – Making Groups of 5

Children roll a die or draw a number card and move around a school-supplies-themed board. Wherever they land, they add to their collection by filling in knapsacks for that supply — working toward creating groups of 5 for each one.

Each child uses:

A tracking sheet with 9 different school supplies

5 supply containers under each school supply to fill in as they collect

A second sheet to mark off completed groups of 5

Play until all groups are complete, or set a goal amount for a quicker game!

The second thing is decomposing the Number 5 – School Supplies Math

Students explore all the different ways to make 5 using school supply pieces and knapsacks. They create combinations that equal 5 (like 1 pencil + 1 crayon + 3 erasers = 5), then represent their thinking through drawing and recording equations.
