I wanted to share a new math center that has quickly become one of my favorite back-to-school activities!
It's a Counting & Graphing Game that's simple enough for preschoolers but still gives kindergarten students lots of meaningful math practice.
Here's how it works...
Students choose one of four themed game boards:
Ready for School
Ready for Art
Ready to Play
Ready to Build
Children roll a die (or draw a number card) and move around the board using any game pieces you already have in your classroom.
Every time they land on a picture, they find that same picture on their recording sheet and color in (or cross off) one box.
By the time the game is over, they've created their own graph without even realizing they're practicing math!
Then the students use their completed graph to answer questions like:
• Which picture has the most?
• Which has the least?
• Are any of the pictures equal?
• How many more does the winner have than the least?
You can have children play independently, or turn it into a partner game where the first player to complete three rows on their recording sheet wins.
The game boards laminate easily, fold in half for storage, and can be used year after year in your math center.
If you're looking for a hands-on way to practice counting, graphing, comparing quantities, and talking about data during the first weeks of school, I think your students will really enjoy this one.
