A flag for a fourth of July crafts even if the children do not go to a parade is lots of fun.

Flag making is a great July 4th crafts activity. I love flag making  for other occasions as well. because the flag making incorporates lots of great skills that kids need.

The way I do these flags is cafeteria style.Which means in a nutshell, that they get their tray, which is their base to decorate on and then they choose materials to decorate their base with.

Below are some of the materials I offered to the children in red, white and blue .  Of course, you can offer any number of materials as long as they are wither red, white or blue.

You can add all kinds of red, white and blue materials like these Red White Blue Ribbon and Buttons, Red/White/Blue.

It is very important to be aware of three things.

1. Every child is going to make a flag according to his or her developmental level. When they are 3 years old, their flags will look very haphazard as the children will just basically slap materials onto the template.
2. There is no reason for kids to be told to make their flag really look like the American flag. If we believe in creativity then the point is for us to allow the children to create a flag with the right colors but, allowing them to be as creative as possible
3. You can display the US Flag   if you want and some of the children may take cues from the flag and try to add some 4th of July Star Stickers but, don’t expect it from the really young ones.

I particularly love to see the way kids use their measuring skills as they try to fit ribbons and yarn into their flag designs.

After their flags are decorated and dry you can add something to hold the flag up.

You can use Natural Wood Craft Dowel Rods and if you do so, you will have to fold over part of the flag to keep it on. Or else you can just tape the dowel to the back of the flag using the same color tape as the template.

If you don’t have dowels, you can take a piece of tagboard and roll it up. As you roll it it looks like a stick and you can tape that to the template for the child to hold and wave.

I’ve also just used a piece of newspaper rolled up as well.
The important thing is that the children should be able to hold and wave their flags.

If you don’t live in the U.S (in which case you probably aren’t reading this post) then you can use the colors of your own country’s flag.
