This was a lesson in an art series I did teaching perspective rules in landscapes. Here are some of the things I taught and how the children created based on this lesson

I  showed them the  image below where the paper is divided into 3.

perspective lines

I explained how  objects that are  closer to us go on the bottom of the page and the items far away go on top.

perspective lines with trees

Here is an example showing how when we add trees higher and higher up the paper they look further and further away .

I also then showed them the picture below of a boy and a house.

large boy and large house

Notice how huge he seems next to house as they are both at the bottom of the picture but….

large boy with house far away

if you move the house up at the top and it just looks further away with the boy not looking so large anymore.

(This concept is not really for young children.)

I then had them draw and color items on white drawing paper, cut them out and paste them onto their landscapes where they want those items to be.

This child  made a picture of someone in the great flood. The person is lying in the water in the bottom and next to him are the fish. 🙂

In the picture below  after this child drew her girl and then pasted her on her landscape, she didn’t want to cut and paste anymore so I gave her oil pastels to fill in other stuff she wanted. landscape 3

The child of the picture below wanted to draw some boats in her water but, didn’t know how. I pulled out some pictures of some boats. She then chose the ones she wanted, copied, colored and cut them out and added them.landscape 4

The next few  pictures had houses added to them.

I am there guiding them along the process when they say what they want to make. I give reference pictures and help repeat the ideas of where the items should be placed to show perspective.

The following pictures were done on their own without any of my intervention.

You can add all sorts of markers and other writing implements for the children to add to their pictures.
