I had not posted a New Years Crafts for kids as I was never able to think of a specific idea that was developmentally appropriate. Recently I started a series on my YouTube channel where I find cookie cutter, copycat crafts about specific topics and I recreate them in a more creative way.

I wanted to create a video about New Years crafts but, I could not figure out what to do. After scrolling though lots of cookie cutter crafts I realized that the main themes of crafts for New Years were decorations for parties and crafts having to do with that year.

As a result, I decide I would do something different for this year's New Years crafts. I decided to take a trip to a crafts store and decide from looking at the materials what crafts that would be decorations or related to the number of that year (in this case 2025).

Here are some of the sections I browsed through when trying to figure out which art materials I could use for New Years crafts.

These were some of the materials I ended up purchasing and I will go through each one and show you what I thought could be made with them. Some I actually had some kids make while others I'll just show you what you can do.

When I first walked into the crafts store I noticed these things that I thought the children could use to warp with yarn as there were notches and then they could string them.

I did realize afterwards that they were dreidels that kids use on Chanukah but, I still had some kids color them and wrap around with yarn. I saw that if they needed to be strung, pipe cleaners were the best way to do so.

Speaking of pipe cleaners I also bought these very pretty, tinsely gold pipe cleaners which I used for making chains. You can also add regular pieces of shiny and no shiny papers for these as well.

I ended up at some shelves full of Styrofoam and was trying to figure out what to do with them. I picked up some small balls and some wire and I thought that they would be good for stringing after the kids colored the balls. You can also cut up some egg cartons, have the children color them and ass them to the stringing.

Once I finished with the stringing activities, I turned to doing activities with the numbers 2025 which is the year coming up as of this writing. I came across these large number stencils and decided that was the perfect way to use them. (actually, ones a bit smaller would be better I think)

There are a few things I did with the number 2025.

First I had my grandson (age 7)trace the numbers 2025 onto a large background. These numbers were quite big so we used a large sketch pad that was opened and we had to use both sides. You can use a poster board or smaller numbers.

Once you have these numbers outlines you can fill them in by painting, coloring or putting tiny collage pieces for mosaics.

You can also cut out each number, have paint, color or collage on them and then paste them onto a background. This probably would work best for filling in the numbers.

for the next activities I used tape and then oil pastels and watercolors.

I had my grandson color through the stencils with oil pastels onto the paper and then paint with watercolors over it. White pastels gives that magic effect when painting on top but colored pastels work well too.

The next one is a different kind of resists. You would need to write the letters with the tape and then color or paint over it. In this case I colored over with colored pencils which was possibly too light. When it's all colored over you pull off the tape and you see the shape of the numbers you added with the tape.

Another thing to do with tape is to actually color or paint the tape. I have a piece colored on the left and then to make it easier I taped the tape down onto the paper to keep it steady.

When the tape is all colored you can use the tape to write Happy New Years or the number of the year.

The last activity is a two pronged one. I found these small, mini craft sticks. I had the kids color them which is one activity.I then showed them how they can write out the message they want with the sticks.

It would probably be helpful if you or if they are old enough to do so, write out the words or numbers first and then paste the sticks on top of them.

I hope my visit to the crafts store and the activities we did with the materials found gives you your own ideas of how you can make festive new year's decorations and crafts projects.
