The media used for these projects (mixed media)were bleeding tissue paper and oi pastels. there were 2 different grades that did these 2 projects.
A first grade class and a third grade class.
We used warm colored tissue paper because those are Fall colors. The first graders were introduced to the concept that colors can be called warm.
On the board was hung a group of line drawings of trees along with a few beautiful fall landscape photos. These are reference photo’s.
The first graders were given sharpies and told to make as many trees as they could on their papers.
The were then told to color in their trunks using the oil pastels.
After their trees were drawn they were given many different squares of tissue papers in the warm colors. Reds, orange and yellow. I gave out purple too since some of the children insisted that there are purple leaves in the fall.
They got containers of water with brushes to use with the bleeding tissue paper.
They placed their pieces of tissue paper over their trees (and many put them all over the whole paper), brushed water over their papers and lifted the tissue paper, dyeing their paper in fall colors.
For the third graders out Fall landscapes were a bit more advanced.
I was teaching them about space. The first thing I teach with that is about the horizon line.
The horizon line is the line that separates the sky from the ground.
They then drew trees in various places on their papers using oil pastels. They are taught that the trees must be under the horizon line.
They then used tissue paper in a few different ways to add to their trees.
They had leeway on how to decorate. Some used oil pastels to color in and some used the tissue paper to dye or to glue.
I show them many examples for them to see how there is no white in any landscape photo or painting but there is color above and below the horizon line.
Even though these are really landscapes the point was to use warm colors to create Fall pictures.
