This was a really cool idea I had that came about through another project we did.
I recently wrote a bit about a great collage activity that I did with the children using shapes and patterned paper. You can see that post here
For the first graders collages I was allowing them to pick out one part of a pattern from these patterned papers I had to incorporate into their collages.
The next week I figured Hmmmm, these patterned papers have lots of potential.
I then had the children pick a paper that they liked and try to recreate the pattern onto another paper.
They definitely used their creative expression for some of the patterns.
Some of the kids did quick, basic pattern copying while others spent literally weeks on these.
A couple of them kept going back to them and doing the most intricate patterns.
I was truly amazed at how persistent some of them were in finishing their patterns.
This type of activity is so good for so many reasons. Fine motor skills, visual perception, spatial perception and just plain patience.
I think that their ability to transfer over the patterns they see onto another paper are giving them real foundational skills that I am sure will help them in future schooling.
For the children who who have the patience to do this, it can keep them really busy for hours. You can probably find all kind so patterns on papers around your house or classroom.
You can even download some from the internet I am sure. They can either copy the colors they see, or create their own.
What a fun project! I could see my kids enjoying this. Pinning 🙂
Thanks Maryann. If you don’t mind could you tell me if you think my site seems to be more geared for teachers than parents like you?
I think your site is a great resource for both parents and teachers. It feels to me as if you approach it as more of a professional than a parent, though – would you agree?
Thank you. That is my point. I am trying to give art activities that I know are educationally sound but, I don’t want to scare off parents & someone told me it seems to invite teachers so I wanted to hear your opinion 🙂
